While French President Jacques Chirac has sent political commentators into a frenzy over the past few days with his apparent strike at Sarkozy, new polls taken in the first few days of January show that the French are almost unanimously against a third Chirac term in office. A full 81% don't want Chirac to even enter the campaign as a candidate, something that is unlikely but still possible. On the right, 82% don't want a third Chirac term, even greater than the 79% on the left.
This can only mean one thing for a man so intent on hanging on: let go.
