A Look Ahead

Here's a listing of what to look forward to in the upcoming year.

UMP party members will begin voting in their primary on January 2 by internet.
Segolene Royal will be taking a several day trip to China at the beginning of the month.
The UMP will officially designate its candidate (Nicolas Sarkozy) on January 14.

Segolene Royal may take a trip to the United States where she will meet with Democratic party leaders, although that is still up in the air.

Candidates must turn in their list of 500 elected sponsors if they are to be on the ballot. Although Jean-Marie Le Pen will likely make the cut, there is still the chance that he will come up short. Towards the end of the month he Constitutional Council will announce all candidates who will be on the ballot.

The sponsors of each candidate will be revealed.
April 22 will be the first round of voting.

May 6 will be the second round of voting.
Jacques Chirac officially steps down (assuming he doesn't run himself) towards the end of the month.
