New poll puts Royal on top, Le Pen stays strong
A new poll carried out at the beginning of January shows that Socialist candidate Segolene Royal would win the second round of voting against UMP candidate Nicolas Sarkozy 52% to 48%. This is a slight abberation from polls in December, which showed both deadlocked at 50-50.
In terms of the first round of voting, nothing much has changed. This particular poll shows both Royal and Sarkozy with over 30%, although that will end up depending on how many other candidates are on the ballot. National Front candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen is still running strong with 15%, but UDF candidate Francois Bayrou has slid from 8% to 6%.
