Today French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said that he will abstain from voting in the UMP primary because President Jacques Chirac has not yet decided whether he will seek a third presidential term. This would all be well and good if it wasn't for the fact that there is only one candidate on the UMP ballot (Sarkozy) and that Villepin himself is rumored to possibly harbor presidential ambitions. He also made it clear that this was not simple political courtesy, but a thinly veiled strike at Sarkozy.
"You don't win by lining up a political family behind a candidate as though they were peas or sardines in a can. An election isn't about simple arithmetic."
