Sarkozy or Bayrou, Borloo decides
Much of the moderate French right is waiting to see where Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of Employment, Social Cohesion and Housing, will throw his support in this election race.
Borloo is a member of Sarkozy's UMP, and has said that "I am in a political family. I do not change a political family." This has not stopped speculation that he may publicly support Sarkozy's challenger, Francois Bayrou.
Last week a Sarkozy spokesperson was asked if Borloo was backing Sarkozy, and they answered "without fault." This was swiftly contradicted by Borloo himself, who said tat "Rachida Dati is not my spokesman. I contradict formally. No agreement was reached to date." Borloo has given previous hints that he respects Bayrou as a candidate and political partner, but it remains to be seen whether he would ever actually carry through with such a high-level political fracture.
