UMP candidate Nicolas Sarkozy has quickly responded to attacks by National Front candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen, who mocked Sarkozy while visiting a multiracial suburb (see story below).
"I was in those districts 209 times...we are in democracy...(Le Pen) goes where he wants.
We are fifteen days from the first round, and one says to me: why you don't go there Mister? (...) But why would I go? Because France, is not only Argenteuil, (...) I must go everywhere."
Sarkozy is clearly wary of going too far in attacking Le Pen, and made sure to focus much of his criticism on the media, who he claims reproached him every time he previously went to those suburbs. Even if Le Pen is not a factor in the first round, Sarkozy is counting on receiving most of Le Pen's voters in the runoff, which could be put in jeopardy if Sarkozy were to alienate them so late in the game.
